Thanksgiving vs. Appreciation

It’s THANKSGIVING friends!!!

Although I personally didn’t grow up with this celebration and therefore don’t celebrate it (I’m from The Netherlands remember) Yet I’m fascinated by others who do. I see it in American movies, TV series, where they have big feasts and gatherings with friends and family, watching football, having turkey and so on. It reminds me of Christmas actually. The part that I love the most, aside from all the good food, is probably when everyone is saying what they are grateful for. It’s beautiful when a group of people gather and practice gratitude, it makes me wonder why we don’t do this more often.

Being grateful is such a powerfully transformative force. It changes the way you speak, the way you think and the way you feel and even better, how you make others feel. This brings me to the meaning of appreciation. What’s the difference between Thanksgiving and being grateful for something or someone compare to appreciation? I believe it’s different. Appreciation is about recognizing something great in someone else and letting them know about it. And as Steven Covey taught us: “The greatest need of a human being is to be understood, validated and appreciated.

So wouldn’t it be great to start saying something specific you love or admire about the people you meet, it can be your loved ones, friends, co-workers, classmates, family members or even total strangers! I want you to brag about them. Just give them a shout out!

And if you are not used to giving people compliments, it’s all good, just simply start by doing it to yourself! Stand in front of your mirror and start saying what you appreciate about yourself, specific traits and features or expressions you love. Think of uplifting words like courage, thoughtfulness or sense of humor.

You know the grass is always greener where you water it, and this is especially true in our relationships. The more you can express genuine appreciation for people in your life, the more fulfilling your life will be. So let this appreciation party getting started! Please share in below comment section one person in your life you appreciate and why. Remember to be specific babes! Would love to hear from you! X
